Avoriaz Ski Resort

Avoriaz Ski Resort can be found in the centre of the Portes du Soleil skiing area. The location of this resort means it will never be short of snow during ski season with the area receiving around eight metres of snow every winter. Avoriaz is just a one hundred and five kilometre drive from Geneva Airport making it easily accessible in your Geneva rental car.

The ski school here has over one hundred and eighty instructors with many languages catered for such as English, German and Italian. There are ample opportunities for snowboarding as well as skiing at Avoriaz with a splendid snow park available for boarders.

There are slopes which will test those of all skiing abilities however areas for beginners are quite limited with the majority of areas ideal for those of a reasonable skill level. Avoriaz is of course part of Portes du Soleil which means six hundred and fifty kilometers of pistes overall spanning twelve resorts.

There are activities available outside skiing such as bowling, hang gliding and an ice skating rink. There are two late night clubs as well as a nice assortment of restaurants and café bars.

Champery Ski Resort

Champery Ski Resort has a long running history as an excellent holiday location. The year 2007 marked one hundred and fifty years of tourism in the area. If you are looking for traditional charm and a warm welcome then Champery is ideal.

There are lots of great skiing opportunities with over six hundred and fifty kilometres of runs and two hundred plus lifts available. The Portes du Soleil ski pass covers this area which according to some is the largest ski area in the world

Champery Resort is located at one thousand and fifty metres amidst some spectacular mountain scenery. The beginning of tourism in this area goes back to the opening of the Hotel Dent-du-Midi in 1857. It was a high class hotel catering for rich Brits who were on European tours. The hotel lasted almost one hundred years before falling into disrepair.

Champery is not really suited for beginners and is mainly for well skilled skiers. The Swiss wall is certainly a location in which advanced skiers will want to test their ability. There are also plenty of other resorts close by such as Avoriaz, Les Gets, Châtel and Morzine.
 
The pretty village of Champery offers an idyllic setting in which to relax after an enjoyable day on the slopes.

Les Carroz Ski Resort

Les Carroz Ski Resort is located in the Grand Massif smack bang in the Alps. It is an excellent resort offering superb skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Les Carroz can be reached in less than an hour from the airport in your car hire Geneva service.
 
This resort is particularly suited for skiers of Intermediate level. Beginners will also find suitable ski areas such as the green runs on Flaine bowl. Advanced skiers may want to check out Diamant Noir or the Styx Piste. Snowboarding areas close by include Flaine, Samoens and Aujon. There are also some other excellent resorts in the Grand Massif area such as Morillon.

The local town makes for an excellent family stay. It is a friendly easy going town with some quiet bars and restaurants. It is one of the more affordable ski resort towns with reasonably priced accommodation available. Some other activities which can be arranged include hot air ballooning and tobogganing. Flaine ski resort is sometimes considered to be more suitable for beginners and families. Those looking for a thriving nightlife however may want to look elsewhere.

Les Gets Ski Resort

Last week we talked about Chamonix ski resort so this week we are going to write about Les Gets which is another fantastic resort and just an eighty six kilometre drive from the Airport in your Geneva car hire.

This resort can be found in the region of Portes du Soleil. It offers superb skiing as well as snowboarding opportunities. The resort is well connected by road and can also be reached easily from Chambery Airport and Sion Airport.

There are two hundred and six lifts at Les Gets and over six hundred and fifty kilometers of excellent pistes to enjoy. Head to Mont-Cheri to visit the snow park. Here you will find slopes which are mainly for beginners to intermediate level. Tougher tests can be found at the Chavannes Bowl which is also an excellent spot for snowboarding.

Some other nearby resorts worth a look include Avoriaz, Les Crosets, Morzine and Abondance.

There are some really nice picturesque accommodation options in this area such as Savoyard chalets and well as the usual assortment of hotels. Everything you require can easily be found here such as ski schools and excellent restaurants and bars

Overall Les Gets Ski Resort is more suitable for beginners. It can get quite busy at weekends so be prepared.

Chamonix Ski Holiday

There is certainly no shortage of top notch ski resorts within driving distance of Geneva Airport. Over the coming weeks and months we will aim to write about as many of them as possible highlighting key details which will hopefully help you make a decision on which ski resort is right for you.

First I’m going to start with Chamonix.

This resort is renowned for both skiing and snowboarding. It is located in the midst of Mont Blanc in France.  You will marvel at your surroundings here, it truly is stunning. This resort takes just one hour to reach in your Geneva car hire. The town of Chamonix also has much to offer with some excellent places to stay as well as a thriving night life. There is also a skating rink, a pool, a bowling alley and a casino. Be careful however as this town is not cheap.

Many experts consider Chamonix to be the Leader of Alpine sport. Experienced skiers will certainly want to try the famed Vallée Blanche. This can be quite busy due to its popularity. It would certainly be a tough place for a beginner to start. Argentiere Resort would be more suitable for beginners and is just a four mile drive from here. Le Tour and Les Houches are other resorts within the Chamonix Valley.

If you are traveling with skiers of varying abilities then Chamonix may not be ideal if you all want to stick together. If you don’t mind this aspect then there are plenty of slopes within the vicinity to suit everyone.
